Diversity-X: A simple tool to increase citation diversity [25.09.24]
We are excited to introduce Diversity-X, an innovative tool designed to assess and address the diversity of citations in your academic work. Diversity-X evaluates gender and national diversity in research articles, student coursework, syllabi, and more. With Diversity-X, we aim to help close existing citation gaps and ensure that all relevant literature is recognized.
Gender diversity and the fair representation of women in science are widely debated and often criticized in academia (Braun et al., 2023; Trepte & Loths, 2020). National diversity, referring to an author’s country of affiliation, has also been problematized. Previous research has demonstrated that only a few of the many countries where academics are based are visible in scientific publications (Scharkow & Trepte, 2023; Trepte & Loths, 2020). Specifically for gender diversity, research consistently finds that the issue is not resolved simply by having more women in academia; their work is not received the same way as that of their male peers. While there are currently more female than male researchers working and publishing in the social sciences, a citation gap persists. Diversity-X is easy to use. It takes no more than five minutes to upload the PDF file you want to check and to understand the results.
What does Diversity-X do?
- Check gender diversity of cited authors: Report the proportion of female authors and the gender homogeneity of cited author teams
- Check national diversity of cited authors: Report the proportion of U.S.-affiliated authors and the number of authors from the five most common countries of affiliation
- Check recency of cited literature: Report the proportion of references from the last five years and the distribution of publication dates of references across decades
