DFG-Project: Young Scholars Network on Privacy and Web 2.0

The social web is characterized by self-disclosure and the exchange of private information. Intimate details from the lives of the users fuel online communication. The handling of private data nonetheless poses risks for on internet users, which becomes a global problem due to the international interconnectedness. The German Research Foundation (DFG) financed a scientific network of fifteen international renowned researchers under the responsibility of Prof. Dr. Sabine Trepte to support the international dialogue on "Privacy and the Social Web".

Short description

Due to the globality of the internet and the rapid development of the social web, privacy online has to be studied internationally and requires short communication channels between researchers. The project "Young Scholars Network on Privacy and the Social Web" enabled the direct scientific exchange between excellent international young researchers. The 15 members of the network came from different universities all over the world (Havard University, University of Amsterdam, the Michigan State University, City University of Hong Kong, University of Bath, University of Hamburg, Hans-Bredow-Institute in Hamburg, University of Arts in Berlin, University of Hohenheim, University of Mainz and University of Duisburg-Essen).

The structure of the network pursued three goals: Besides a systematic conceptualization of methods and theories on privacy online, the main focus lied on the international comparison of privacy handling and self-disclosure in the web 2.0. Furthermore, the network sought to set a research agenda which specifies how the developments of privacy and self-disclosure should be accompanied scientifically. The result was a survey in five different countries as well as a book in which comprehensive theoretical perspectives and aggregated empirical results are published.
