National and gender diversity in communication [06.09.20]
Newly published study on diversity in communication science by Sabine Trepte in collaboration with Laura Loths: The results are now available online!...
Research is crucially influenced by a scientist’s cultural and national perspective. Nationality has been shown to be related to work values, interests and professional decisions; it determines which research topics are chosen and how much time scholars invest in their research. Put simply, there is a national touch to the research that is conducted—and published. But what if the scholars of different nationalities and ethnicities are not equally represented in academic publications? What if journals are biased towards white and Western authors? This could mean that not all voices are equally heard and that also the research we read in academic journals is biased towards the perspectives, values and interests of particular nations and ethnicities. In their article, Sabine Trepte and Laura Loths analyze articles of six journals in communication with regard to their gender and national diversity.
