Privacy and Political Online Microtargeting during the European Elections 2024 [12.03.24]
This year, after 5 years, the time has come again: Europe is electing its European Parliament. A special feature of this election: For the first time, EU citizens aged 16 and over are also allowed to vote.
However, political content about elections is not only disseminated via posters, TV debates or newspapers. With Instagram, TikTok and Facebook, there are high-reach platforms for finding out about current and political events, sharing, or creating content yourself.
Together with the University of Mainz, we want to understand whether and how comprehensively political online microtargeting is perceived on social networks, what influence it has on privacy concerns and whether these in turn have an influence on voting behavior. Tracking, logging, and interview data will be gathered to provide comprehensive insights into how social media is used for political information.
The new project on the 2024 European elections is funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG). Further information on the project can be found here.
