The prevalence of eating disorders is particularly high among women and girls, she says. Social media, such as the image-driven platform Instagram, can fuel eating disorders as women's body image clashes with the staged images on Instagram. While Instagram, as Sabine Trepte explains, cannot be seen as a sole trigger of eating disorders, it can contribute to a reinforcement of existing preconceptions or the manifestation of unrealistic body ideals. A stable social environment and withdrawal from the consumption of harmful content, on the other hand, can mitigate this dynamic.
