Department Media Psychology at the Annual Conference of the DGPuK in Bremen  [24.04.23]

The 68th annual conference of the German association of communication science scholars (DGPuK) will take place in Bremen from May 17 to 19. The Department Media Psychology is represented with a total of three contributions. The conference topic promises exciting perspectives on digital transformation and societal consequences due to the automation of communication.

For the second time, the working group “Gender Diversity in Communication Science Publications” will meet in Bremen. Sabine Trepte and Michael Scharkow invited researchers from all over Germany to discuss gender diversity and visibility in science. The working group is part of the project on “Gender Citation Diversity” in collaboration with the University of Mainz, which is funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF).

In fact, the gender diversity at the ICA conference has been very balanced for the last decade. In contrast to other scientific formats, such as journals, conferences perform particularly well. This is shown by a recent study on gender diversity at scientific conferences, which is presented by Maike Braun, Laura Heintz, Simon Kruschinski, Sabine Trepte and Michael Scharkow at the DGPuK.

Johanna Börsting, Regine Frener, and Sabine Trepte address the growing concerns about political micro-targeting on social media. Using data from the 2021 German Federal Election, they show that it is difficult for people to recognize microtargeted ads. When users feel to have control over their data or if they trust the service provider, it strengthens their privacy perception and political information behavior.

The DGPuK offers a platform to discuss current results and trends in communication science research together with experts from science, politics, and practice. We look forward to a lively exchange in Bremen!
