We were at the „digital week” 2021 in Kiel! [07.10.21]

At the "Digital Week" 2021 in Kiel, Johanna Schäwel discussed the relevance of individual online privacy of social media users in the context of political targeting.

Social media are a central part of our daily lives. They are used for communication, entertainment, or information research. The data traces left by users can be used by political parties as a basis for political targeting. Political targeting addresses potential voters with content tailored to them in order to convince them of a particular message or party. This tactic is viewed critically, as it represents an intrusion into the individual privacy of users. This is because they are usually unaware that their data is being collected, processed and used to influence them - or how to protect themselves against this. In her talk, Johanna Schäwel discussed the relevance of users' need for autonomy and their individual experience and perception of privacy in the context of political targeting.
