Talk on social media friendships by Dr. Trepte  [15.03.23]

On the 27th of March 2023, Prof. Dr. Sabine Trepte will give a talk on "Friendships & Social Media - What do they give, what do they cost?". The lecture will be hosted by the Württembergische Landesbibliothek.

The talk is part of the program accompanying the exhibition "Freunde Sammeln" [engl. "Collecting Friends"], which can be visited from the 31st of January to the 22nd of April in the Württembergische Landesbibliothek. The exhibition deals with “Stammbücher” [engl. family books] - better known as friendship albums. The origins of these albums can be traced back to the 16th century. As historical artifacts, they offer a unique insight into the character and significance of friendships and interactions across centuries.

The program accompanying the exhibition concludes on the 27th of March featuring what is arguably the most contemporary form of friendship albums - social media platforms. Prof. Trepte will provide insights into how social media revolutionized interpersonal interaction but will also cast a critical perspective at the role of social media in friendships. In particular, she will focus the topic of social support on and off social media.

The event will take place on the 27th of March 2023 at 6 p.m. and is planned in a hybrid format (Webex link: bitbw.webex.com/meet/wlb ). Attendance is free of charge.
