Our team at WebTalks of the Digital Autonomy Hub   [28.10.21]

Prof. Dr. Sabine Trepte and Dr. Johanna Schäwel were guests at digital discussion groups of the Digital Autonomy Hub. The Digital Autonomy Hub is an interdisciplinary competence center for the sovereign use of digital media, consisting of 43 institutes and organizations.

Prof. Dr. Sabine Trepte discussed the relevance of digital sovereignty and privacy on the Internet together with Prof. Dr. Rainer Malaka (University of Bremen) and Prof. Dr. Dominik Herrmann (University of Bamberg). The apparent contradiction between the need for privacy and disclosing private information in social media was discussed from a psychological and informational perspective. Central aspects for the perception of individual privacy in social media are medial afrordances and available mechanisms for regulating privacy (e.g. control or interpersonal communication).

Dr. Johanna Schäwel joined Robert Behrendt (mediale pfade & DataSkop) and Kathrin Morasch (Internet Governance Forum & Klicksafe) for a discussion on the topic of "Privacy and data protection - meeting children and young people at eye level". The central point of discussion was raising children's and young people's awareness of the issue of privacy and data protection without using paternalistic measures, exhortations or prohibitions. Particular attention should be paid to the needs of young people and they should be met with empathy. Joint negotiation of privacy and data protection can be seen as a profitable measure.

Both WebTalks are available online.
