The Routledge Handbook of Privacy and Social Media  [27.06.23]

"The Routledge Handbook of Privacy and Social Media" takes a look at the past decade of privacy research and at the same time offers an outlook on the decades to come. Leading scholars from the fields of communication, psychology, computer science, and law provide insights into current research and offer valuable impulses for answering open questions about privacy and social media.

The handbook discusses two closely intertwined concepts: privacy and social media. Social media show us the unexpected beauty of the mundane, the absurd, as well as the funny. They provide a platform for political discussions and social activism, set trends, and help us connect and learn. We all share and spend significant portions of our private lives on social media. But this also means that – at least this is often assumed – the right to privacy is more challenged than ever before.

With this edited volume, we are challenging the understanding of privacy for this reason. How should we define privacy in social media? Is there privacy without the public sphere? What does the "social" in "social media" mean for privacy? What are the risks but also the answers to the challenges posed by the systematic and commercial use of online data? Why do users feel helpless and how can decision-makers assert individual and collective interests?

In "The Routledge Handbook of Privacy and Social Media" we consider these and many other questions from interdisciplinary perspectives. We create a common understanding of the concept of privacy and offer informed discussions of numerous practically relevant fields of application. To this end, we provide an overview of flagship studies on privacy on social media and explore the ways in which factors such as culture, gender, and trust influence our perceptions and behavior. Special attention is also given to vulnerable populations such as children and older adults. In light of algorithmic control of media content, we consider privacy in the context of technologies and artificial intelligence and develop practical approaches to pressing privacy issues on social media.

The volume thus provides a comprehensive and valuable reference for advanced students, scholars, as well as policymakers. The contributions offer sound insights and practical approaches to address current challenges in dealing with privacy on social media.
