Privacy, anonymity, and inequality - With five contributions, the researchers from the Department of Media Psychology participated in the biennial Congress of the German Psychological Society (DGPs). The congress took place in Hildesheim under the theme “View on/of Science” between the 12th and 15th of September.
Regine Frener reported on the latest results of the Need for Privacy Scale (NFP-S), which was developed in cooperation with Sabine Trepte and Jana Dombrowski. In addition, she is the young members' representative in the Media Psychology Division. At the congress, she discussed with the representatives of the other divisions about, for example, the Wissenschaftszeitvertragsgesetz, social media activities of the divisions, and the recruitment of doctoral students.
On Thursday, Alexandra Lux gave an insight into a large-scale study on the topic of anonymity and its influence on online disinhibition. She compared the perceived anonymity and disinhibition between networks that differ in their technical, visual, and discursive anonymity. She also took part in the poster sessions at the congress. In this study she explored harm reduction through communication on DarkNet drug fora in collaboration with master student Nils-David Hirsch.
In the following symposium, Jana Dombrowski presented a study that examined the influence of privacy mechanisms on the use of different regulatory tactics. She emphasized the importance of communication as a mechanism and as a tactic for regulating privacy on social media.
Maike Braun reported results from a total of three experiments that she conducted in collaboration with Susanne Bruckmüller at her previous place of work in Erlangen. The experiments examined the relationship between framing, internal attribution, and perceptions of wage inequality.
The program of the DGPs 2022 invited exciting discussions and a lively exchange. The Team Media Psychology is looking forward all the more to the next DGPs Congress, which will take place in Vienna in 2024.
